Evanton History



Evanton was set up along site the village of Drummond which pre-date evanton by about 200 years on the Foulis Estate. In 1807 Alexander Fraser owner of the Balconie Estate founded the village of Evanton. The village is a planned settlement and has been commented many times by various historians "as an attractive example of a well panned, regularly laid out estate village".

Evanton expaned rapiadly overtaking the size of the village of drummond which then merged with Evanton. The village centre consits of 6 roads Balconie Street, Camden Street, Livra Street, Hermitage Street and Assynt Street all these roads have a centre road that links them up which is Chapel Road.  The village has continued to expand further afield. Swordale and Glenglass.

Fyrish Monument which can be seen from the A9 for miles around. Is the replica of a gate way to an Indian Temple. This was commissed to be built by Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar to create employment which in the village in 1782 the monument sits on Fyrish Hill (Cnoc Fyrish) It represents the Gate of Negapatam, a port in Madras, India, which General Munro took for the British in 1781. Originally there were four monument built within Novar estate. Fyrish is the final monument to be buillt which was positioned on the highest hill. Two of the other monument still are intact. Which you can walk to from the village and visit all three. One was dismantled.

The village also played a vital part to the war effort in World War One and World War 2 along with the cold war
